Full Throttle FPS Mode

Published by under Poker

Yesterday I played in the first AIPS event. It’s a series that will run the whole year and since I’ve changed my goals for poker to be more as an entertainment activity, I decided it would be fun to make a real serious run at trying to win the series. Points were my goal – the money wasn’t important.

Well, with some lucky timing and lucky play, I managed to not only make it to the final table, but to have 1/3 of the chips in play with 7 left. Not bad for some one who was the short stack when we were on the bubble with around 1500 chips and 250/500 blinds. Yeah, I was playing real weak tight at the time, but I was more concerned with getting some points to start the season out. It really took some luck to get the stack but I felt like I could really put them to good use. I guess I was wrong. As you can see on the hand, I didn’t think I was ahead, but I had committed so much already.

Where did the fancy play syndrome come in? Oh that was a bit later when I thought I could bully the table around a bit with my stack. I ended up having Q♠ J♦ in middle position and decide to see a flop after another early limper with 600/1200 blinds. 3 see the flop and it comes out Q♥ 4♦ 2♠. I have top pair and decent kicker. The BB who is a good and from all accounts, fairly conservative player. By that I mean doesn’t likely push around without cards. She bet out 5250 which was exactly pot. EP limper folds and since she bet full pot, I have a feeling she at least has a queen. I almost folded to her right there, and I knew calling was only a good move if I thought she would keep betting on the turn if I was beat. The other reason I was having a tough time with this was that she was 2nd in chips with around 36k. I raised to 14k to see if she was serious about the hand and she instantly pushed. It didn’t take long for me to fold. So I kiss away 1/3 of my stack and move on to the next hand.

A few hands later I get K♣ Q♥ UTG 6 handed. I just limp to see what happens (FPS move 1). It folds around to the BB who is a good aggressive player and the third time I had to sit with him in this tourney including having him to my left at the first table. He min-raises it which basically means he got dealt 2 cards. We have similar stacks, 31k for me and 27k for him. I call the minraise. It comes out A♠ T♦ 6♥ and he bets out 5k into a 8400 pot. He could have an ace or he could have air and is continuation betting. In hind site, I don’t see him continuation betting with me limping UTG when an ace flops unless he thinks I limped with a lower pocket pair. I make it 13k to go, again another amount that will make the other person decide if there hand is worth a crap. He took forever which I thought was weird and then ended up pushing his stack. I didn’t feel like calling the rest of my stack or close enough to matter with just a gut shot, and was down to just over 14k when I folded.

The last hand was an inevitable choice but there is a back story to go along with it. After the two unnecessary missteps, there were all ins in the next 4 hands. Twice by me. It didn’t seem to make sense to do anything other than push when I have around 15k at that level. The next hand after I pushed with 9♠9♣ from the BB and picked up the antes and chips from 2 limpers. The next two hands were pushes by other short stacks knocking both of them out. So to make matters worse, we are 4 handed with the blinds going around faster. Good news was I was getting more points.

Now it’s time for the backstory. A few nights ago, I played in the listener tourney for the Nobody Likes Onions podcast. There were only 11 players playing so it mostly played out like a sit n go. I ended up making the money in that one by getting in to the final 3. I had around 2500 with 200/400 blinds. Here is the hand. To make a long story short, what happened what, I raised 2/5 of my chips and got put into a situation that it was obnoxiously unrealistic for me to fold, but completely retarded for me to call, so I end up pushing what I know isn’t the best hand, just cause I think it was the right play to make in the situation. After that I decided to just shove and not have to put up with decisions for myself since it was unlikely I could fold. I ended up busting out doing that in this hand.

So, back to the AIPS tourney. Since I had decided not to put myself in those situations again, there I was with a stack I couldn’t raise with that likely wouldn’t pot commit me. So I started picking hands and going with it. This was my last hand. I don’t regret the play, I just think I can find better spots to test where I’m at. Lesson learned and hopefully it will help my game.

Overall, I think I played well as I’m still trying to get back into the swing of these tournaments. I just wish they were more deep stacked so I could make plays that I’m used to in the cash games. Oh well. I’ll adjust. I played a few more tonight including the Pokersluts Tournament, but I just wasn’t feeling it tonight. Didn’t catch cards and I didn’t feel like I was playing well either. Tonight would have been a perfect omaha night. There is always tomorrow though.

NH? Really? No, two donks decide to make a stand with their flush draws. At least dreoin had the straight draw to go with it and the other donk’s bottom 2 pair was seriously hurting my full house chances. Actually I thought he would have been in a better spot than he was, but I was still 52% to win the hand on the flop. Probably because of the the diamonds that were out. Either way, I’m still running bad at Stars except for a holdem session where I had AA 4 times in less than 100 hands and also had KK that sucked out and stacked a guy who had AA. Apparently that was my day off from the doomswitch setting.
All I know is, I have to start running better soon even at these stakes, or I’m gonna be playing play money.

BB&V

Let’s play a bit of Brag, Beat and Variance.

Brag:
I was searching for ‘hitchhiker’ on flickr and the first result was this.

Beat:
I was at work. :o

Variance:
I closed it right away, work doesn’t do any web access monitoring and no one saw it on my screen – so it’s pretty much like it didn’t happen.

Yet another reason why windows sucks ballz…

Published by under Personal,Tech

If I put in a DVD, it should just play. I shouldn’t have to download codecs, plugins or any other (possibly non-free) software. Seriously, this just shouldn’t even be something I should have to think or worry about. Completely ridiculous for a commercial OS.

This is why I love the freedom of speech

You get to see just how stupid some people’s ideas are.
All I can think of is that this site is created by some right-wing, religious majority wackjob, or a group of right-wing, religious wackjobs (the more wackjobs, the better right?). Apparently The Doors, Metallica, Eminmen ( I can only assume this is because of that Grammy Awards performance), Nirvana, Nickelback, Audioslave and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are all either gay or spreading gay propaganda. I guess I’m totally fucked then. The good list points to a slew of Christian bands which makes it just that much more obvious where their agenda is.  Normally I don’t like to link to a lot of sites that I disagree with since in the world of cyberspace, links are power. But in some cases, they are just so ridiculous that they deserve to be pointed out.
Link was from Ernie.

Pizza Night

Published by under Personal

The kids have been complaining a lot lately, so we figured we would do something to occupy them.
Little Chefs
We ended up having a pizza night, with the pizzas made by the kids. The kids really enjoyed themselves. It was nice to have an activity where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I suggested this idea since I remember doing this when I was a kid. When we made pizza, we got to help out and put on the toppings. We changed it a little for our family. 3 kids, so we made 3 pizzas. I bought some focaccia bread for the crust, and the rest of the ingredients were chosen by the kids: pepperoni, sausage and olives. They were all really proud of the pizzas they made and each one was different. I think that helped a bit to know they each had their own style.
It takes a bit more work to get every one involved, but since every one had such a good time with it, it would be well worth doing again. We just need to come up with some more good kid type recipe foods for them to help out with occasionally. Plus it can’t hurt to teach them some skills that will take with them beyond our house (and yes, they will be leaving). You never know, maybe they are future stars on the Food Network. It’s a nice thought anyway.
