Adventures in Omaha

Published by under Poker

As I mentioned before, I didn’t get much time to play this weekend. The one game I did play was a 22 hand session on Sunday afternoon that I used to kill time before the movie. The game was $50 PLO8 at Full Tilt. I’m a little rusty, so these hand evaluations should be good for me. Chicken soup for the poker player’s soul, or some other tree hugging hippie crap like that.

First hand wasn’t particularly eventful, but in hindsight, I don’t think I played it well.

Ok, so what did I do wrong? I played a very good low hand out of position for a limp. I could have played this for a raise, but not in this game and not for these stakes. Doing that does nothing but build the pot against players who don’t know what they are doing. I then flop top pair with no real redraw on a fairly uncoordinated board. I could have bet out here, but I wanted to see the action behind me since I really didn’t have a redraw at this point. Checked around though. Then I pick up a low draw and to tell you the truth, I really didn’t notice the str8 draw hitting on the turn. That’s the trouble with gut shots, they sneak up on you like that, but no one bet the flop and I have a low redraw so I bet out $1 as a feeler bet and get repotted. That repotting should have told me all I needed to know, but I had top pair with the nut low draw and since I had 2 deuces, there was a decent chance I had the only nut low draw. But this was my mistake. I should realize that top pair isn’t gonna get me anything and only have one draw, I should have folded. I only had 3 bbs invested in the pot at that point, and there wasn’t any one else feeding the pot since the middle position player folded. In the end, I hit my low draw and am forced to check/call to save the ill-advised money I committed on the turn. I still end up losing money on the hand with the rake so my low chance of 16% equity ended up saving me $1 and change that I would have given up if I folded. Idiotic, but it worked out. Sometimes I get lucky.

Enter hand 2. This hand I’m almost even too embarrassed to show, but that’s what this is about right? Public humiliation, I mean, peer evaluation.

There had been a lot of limping going on and a lot of poor post flop play. Basically I got into this hand either hoping to see a jack or and A2x type flop and hopefully that x was a jack. Is that too much to ask? ;)

So I missed my set but gain an open ended straight draw on the flop and a 2 gives me the nuts both ways and a fairly good lock on the hand. The early position player didn’t bet much, $1.50 into and almost $2.50 pot, so I called. A blank comes on the turn with the ten and another just over half the pot bet. I again call. The board pairs on the river and I think for a bit on the players pot sized bet this time. Why bet near pot on the flop and turn and then jump out with pot on the river. He had a lock on either the high or the low and if my low was good, I hadn’t been counterfeited along the way. I forced myself to assume that made the high for him with him having either 66 or A4 and I call. But no, he had the low wrapped up and then outdrew me for the high with trips. The more I think about this hand, the more I flip flop on if this was an ok line or a horrible line. There aren’t a lot of combinations that are scooping me, so it probably was more on the ok side.

Hand 3 was a little better on my part but really short of action, so I will shorten up the hand history.

As I said, not much to this hand. I have a suited AA3x hand and out of position and could have raised, but again, not at this table. I was gonna limp and reraise if a raise came, but me raising likely just builds a flop. Although double suited with a decent low, I would have been more than justified to do so. A short stacker does accommodate with a raise and clears most of the field for me. I set him most of the way in and am surprised when he doesn’t commit his last .40. So a crappy flop comes, but I can’t fold, so I put him in and he doesn’t hit his flush draw and I scoop an alright pot as I try and get back to even.

Two hands later, this hand comes up and I just put it in here to show I was starting to get into my grove again and be able to make some plays.

Let me elaborate that I likely don’t ever make this play in a PLO game, it’s only because it’s a PLO8 game do I even try this. I had a real modest hand in this game with a mediocre low, a flush draw with dead cards, and a dangler (the 8). But like the JJ hand before, I limped trying to play better than the other people post flop. Fortunately only 2 more see the flop with me one being the BB. Oh and BTW, since new players sat in on my left each of the last 2 hands, this is the 3rd time in a row I was under the gun. Starting to get on my nerves but saving me from the big blind I guess. The middle position player is yet another short stacker so if he doesn’t hit, he can’t call anything. The big blind checked quickly and was certain he wouldn’t defend anything at this point. I bet out hoping that the middle position player limped with a low friendly hand on a very low unfriendly board. It worked out and I picked up the small pot.

Hand 5 is kind of interesting and I knew exactly where I was, but was in one of those situations where I didn’t think I could make the right decision at the time cause the situation dictated otherwise.

I end up with pure junk in the big blind and everyone sees the flop. As I’m getting ready to check fold, the flop gives me trips but I really have no kicker. At least the board card is lower than my 9′s so I check to see what the action does. A middle position player pots it and it’s folded back to me. The chances of me being ahead at this point are slim, but he’s a short stacker. I don’t really think he’s making a play but how do I get away from this when it’s 2:3 odds if I decide to set him in cause of his stack. I know I have outs to win or at least tie if we have the same holdings. I end up pushing cause I don’t see where I can’t get away from calling and I need to see all 5 cards with as much as he has behind him. If he had a full stack, I may have gotten away. Sick thing is, I was probably more justified calling if he had a full stack due to implied odds if I hit on that turn. Oh well, I call and hit my 33% shot. I’m still not confident in these situations and need to figure out a better way to evaluate them.

Hand 6 and the last hand (which was also my last hand at the table) isn’t terribly interesting. Maybe some one will get something out of it though.

I raised in middle position to start to build up a big pot for a hand that has a lot of good going for it. Single suited ace with 3 wheel cards is pretty good pickings in this game. I get my wish and everyone and their dog comes along to play and sets up and $11 preflop pot. I gain a monster of a draw to go along with it. I had the nut flush draw with the nut low draw and low insurance. I wasn’t going anywhere with this hand. I had two lines I could have taken here.

  1. I could bet out pot.
  2. I could check hoping some one would bet and raise pot.

The one thing I couldn’t do was play this like a pussy. Against even a set, I’m doing very well odds wise and I can all but taste the money. I end up betting out pot hoping some one with 2 pair or a str8 draw feels like getting brave and at least calls. No one did and I have a hard time believing no one had anything but that’s ok. The preflop pot build up was a decent haul for a final pot.

All in all I ended up a little more than $11 and it was nice to have a session show up green in poker tracker. I still have a bunch of bonus I need to clear at poker stars and I think I’m gonna head back to PLO8 for a while. The games at stars are easier to find than ftp and it’s a good game for bonus clearing. Hopefully I can keep my streak going.

And It’s Name Is…

Published by under Personal

Creeping death finally has a name and it’s name is influenza. TJ went in for another check up since he has got the fever back and his antibiotics ended last week. Well, they found out what it was. $150 in copays and medication costs later, we at least know what is going on. It’s a good thing the medication is only mildly expensive and the doctor wants every one exposed to be on the medication to prevent them from getting it. Well, the kids at least. What little bit of it that I had caught two weeks ago is all but gone. Bad news is that TJ is, unfortunately, going to have to miss even more school. He’s is just distraught over the thought.

Weekend Update

Published by under Personal,Poker

What does one do on their typical anniversary/chinese new year? Well, if your me, you spend 3 hours driving from your sister in laws house with a couple of overtired and sick kids through some light blowing snow. And yes, it is every bit as fun as it sounds.

Actually, I was able to do some things that I wanted to do like update my website to wordpress 2.1. Then in the afternoon, we took the kids (5 of them) to see Eragon. I hadn’t read the book, but my wife and two of her brothers, who went with, all had. Even without reading the book, the movie sucked. Apparently, if you had read the book, it sucked even more.

We got out of the movie around 4 pm and when we got back to my sister in laws house, TJ wasn’t looking too good. He had just finished up his antibiotics at the end of last week. It seems to be like a creeping death redux. It’s like the illness that just won’t go away. I really feel bad for the kids. It gets rough on them when they get sick, but when it lasts upwards of two weeks, then it really takes a toll on them.

So by the time we got on the road, it was like 5:30 and with the almost 3 hour drive ahead of us, it kind of took care of our evening. I was hoping to get a chance to play in the pokersluts tournament, but again it didn’t work out. I swear, zooks and khan, I will play another one. I promise. :)

I did get to play some poker today though. I got about half an hour in of some $50 plo8. It took me a bit to get into the hang of it since I haven’t been playing some hi/lo split ring games. In fact the first couple of split pots, I had to kinda look back at what happened. The players were horrible though, so even not at my best, I ended up around $10 – even after I donked off half a stack when I got scooped by a guy with a perfect hand. I don’t have time to go into the hands tonight, but I will post them soon. I really need to get back to evaluating my hands.

The day didn’t really end up feeling like any real special day, but when your anniversary is only 4 days after valentines day, that has a tendency to happen. I just hope my wife felt it was sufficiently special. If it wasn’t, I will have to do something to make up the ground.

AIPS recap

Published by under Poker

Against the group I’m playing with, I figure the smallest advantage I have is in nlhe. It’s not that I don’t think I have an advantage there, I just think it’s the smallest of all the events we will play in the series. So when I cashed and got points, I thought that was just gravy. The rest of these events, I think I have a distinct advantage but some games I think have more of a luck factor than others. Seven card stud I think is one of those games. I didn’t think I would find a lot of maniacs in the game and I didn’t, so if I didn’t catch some cards, it was gonna be tough going. Well, I didn’t catch much in the way of cards.

But I tried to use experience as best I could and earned a few pots early. So after seeing a few 4ths and not getting much of anywhere, I was at t1288 with 40/80 bets. I was in position with the bring in directly to my left and get dealt 6♥ T♣ J♠ with the Jack in my door. A player from early limped with a K♥ as his door. Another King folded so I figured chances of him having a strong hand like split kings was unlikely, especially with just calling the bring in. It folded to me and I called the bring in being able to close the action and see if I can pair up to likely take the lead in the hand unless the king improves. I half brick with an 8♦ and the king hits a T♠ – the card I would much rather have seen. The bring in hit a jack, but was irrelevant. The king bet out and me still thinking he doesn’t have much but some overs and maybe a draw, I raise trying to take it down there with this information. The bring in folded, but I couldn’t get the King out and he calls. He hit a gorgeous card for me to see with a 6♣ and I hit a dream card too being the 9♣. This gave me an open ended straight draw with tons of outs if I still don’t think the king has a pair. He checked, I bet out on the big street and he folded right off obviously missing his draw. Earned my first pot and back to around starting stack.

A few hands later I stole another one in late with no limpers to me and I had a very poor bare Ace showing. Picked up antes. That led up to this hand:

Seat 1: ThirdHand (1,088)
Seat 2: BadBeatTD (1,717)

After that hit, I slowed down quite a bit again but got a whole series of crap cards like 3J7 and such. So I go on a pretty big fold fest as it seems everyone’s door cards were stuffed with Aces and Kings staring back at my uncoordinated garbage.

Finally I get Kings in the hole and what fortune, I get the bring in with my deuce door card. Play goes as follows:

Seat 1: gwoo10 (3,385)
Seat 2: C furbee (2,021)
Seat 3: Bazkar (2,058)

MacAnthony raises to 268, and is all in - but I can’t sit here with nothing for chips
C furbee calls 68 - Of course you do you one outing luckbox (I’m not bitter or anything)

– I took the liberty to delete all this crap that would just lead up to me weeping like a little baby–

*** 7TH STREET ***
MacAnthony shows K♦ K♠ 2♦ 3♣ 4♣ 8♥ 9♥ (a pair of Kings)
C furbee shows 9♠ 7♠ K♥ K♣ 8c A♦ 6♠ (a pair of Kings)

C furbee wins the pot (1,241) with a pair of Kings
MacAnthony stands up - Exit stage left

So yeah, getting 1 outed on 4th to bust my short stacked ass was not the kind of results I was hoping for with this event. At least C furbee had the decency to take my chips to a win. GG, sir.

Poker, Poker, it’s all Skill

Published by under Poker

And fortunately for me, I’m suffering a complete and utter breakdown of anything that would resemble skill. I’m not gonna get into specifics right now, I’ll post some hands proving my point later, but I’ll sum it up with this. The AIPS? I got 1 outed on 4th to crush me. And the cash game I was playing at the time? I managed to figure out how to dump 3 buyins in just 24 hands. How awesome does that make me? It’s not as easy as it sounds. Go ahead. You try it, and let me know when you do.

I 1 a …

Published by under Personal

There was a recent episode of Dawn and Drew where they kept doing the counting game that many of us did when we were kids. You know when you start with some one and say, I 1 a insert_ridiculous_object_here, then they say, I 2 a same_ridiculous_object, all the way until the other person says I ate (8) a ridiculous_object. Then you poke fun of them and laugh at them like a typical preteen kid who would play this kind of game. Good times, I know. To tell you the truth, I had all but forgotten about that game until it was on their show.

Well, I thought that might be a good thing to bring up to the kids some time to distract them from beating on each other. So I showed TJ the game last night and just like I thought, they thought it was hilarious. They weren’t much for playing the game correctly though. They would play along all the way until you got to 8, and then they would just make up some other shit, just to be defiant a bit. They had a good time with it, though. Later in the evening, I tried to get Amy involved and told her, “I 1 a penis”. She just smirked and rolled her eyes at me. It was worth a shot.

Me: You know, girls are only supposed to have tattoos right above their butt.
I used that term cause he wouldn’t have a clue what the small of the back was.
He looks at mom, then looks back at me, shakes his head and tries to hand the tattoo to me.

Clay: Dad, you’re gonna have to do that one then.

That was one of the funniest things I’ve heard come from my kids’ mouth in a while. I seriously went into a laughing/coughing fit for the next 10 minutes after that one.

Poker Note: Poker posts have been scarce lately just cause I haven’t been playing. I woulda played the pokerslut tour tourney on Sunday, but I just felt like shit and ended up watching Cold Mountain instead. I will be getting back into it tonight at the 2nd AIPS tourney, so hope to see a good turn out.
